League Update 3/4/21

Another league update because after I posted yesterday, we were hit with a bunch of roster management updates, with free agency opening up soon expect sporadic league updates rather than my usual weekly ones.

WR Tyrell Williams Signs 1-Year Deal Worth $6.2 Million with Detroit

With Marvin Jones out the door and Kenny Golladay likely to be tagged, the Lions hope that they can find their next underrated receiver in former Raiders and Chargers WR Tyrell Williams. Williams has always been a great depth WR in his career with the Chargers and sought greener pastures in Oakland when he signed with the Raiders in 2019, he spent last season on IR with a shoulder injury that kept him out all year. This seems like a very  Lions-y signing by kicking the tires on a depth WR who has done much in past years, with FA class with JuJu, Allen Robinson, T.Y., and A.J. Green you would figure they'd go the route of used-to-be-elite guys looking for a second chance to be great. I would be ok with this signing if they already had two solid guys locked in for next season with Williams as WR3, but it's hard to be excited to see Jared Goff throwing 6-yard dump-offs to a guy who's a career backup.

Saints Start Saving by Releasing Pair of Tight Ends

Saints release TEs Jared Cook and Josh Hill saving $2.5 million in cap space. The release of Cook means little to New Orleans as he was scheduled to be a free agent at the start of the new year. The veteran TE now gets a head start on other players by being released early, provided of course he wants to continue his career, after a stunning 12-year career I would not be surprised by his retirement. TE Hill is just the start of cap casualties for the Saints that brings them down to about -$63 million with more to come surely by next week.

Raiders Shake Up Offensive Line

Raiders release OL Gabe Jackson this week, cutting short the 5-year deal he signed with the team in 2017. A solid starter for the team, we should expect a lot of buzz around Jackson's name as every team in need of a Guard should be calling his agent. This move is a business move as the raiders save around $9 million after his release. In other news, Vegas has also started shopping OT Trent Brown. An oft-injured and expensive tackle plays well when he is on the field, but sadly he rarely is. Last season Trent played a total of five games due to his injuries and COVID designations. Not meeting the snap count minimum, Brown is ranked #46 by PFF, which is around the okay-ish starter realm, but his price tag may limit the Raiders' trade routes.

New York Starts Roster Cut Down

The Giants release WR Golden Tate and LB David Mayo. The Giants signed Tate to a 4-year deal in 2019, it is safe to say that the veteran underperformed. Tate scored two touchdowns and had just under 400 yards last season in 12 games. Tate is another one of those veterans that you do not expect to get another job, but if COVID takes out another preseason, teams may continue to rely on veterans if they cannot get a good feel on rookies. Mayo a lower-end linebacker was a low-risk signing for the Giants and an easy choice for release.

LB Thomas Davis Retires

In a procedural move, the Washington Football Team released Davis with his retirement announcement. He will sign a one-day contract to retire with the Carolina Panthers, the team where he made his name. Davis finishes a storied 16-year career playing with CAR, LAC, and WFT and accumulating over 1200 combined tackles, 29 sacks, 2 All-Pros, 3 Pro Bowls, and a Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. Next stop Canton, Ohio.

New Orleans Interested In Trading DT Malcom Brown

Brown being shopped is not a surprise to be. The young DT has been steadily declining in play over time, but still in his prime in may be a better option for the Saints to gain compensation rather than letting him walk. Brown can be seen as a cheap rotational piece for a defensive line needing depth. No teams have been mentioned in trade rumors, but I believe Brown could be a good fit for a team trying to compete next season like the Browns or Bills should at least be checking in with the Saints.
