Earlier this week we saw our first offseason draft trade involving the Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, and Philadelphia Eagles. Here are the details:
Miami Receives
#6 Overall (PHI)
#156 Overall (PHI)
2022 1st (SF)
2022 3rd (SF)
2023 1st (SF)
San Francisco Receives
#3 Overall (MIA)
Philadelphia Receives
#12 Overall (SF)
#123 Overall (MIA)
2022 1st (MIA)
What Does This Mean?
Tua is the Answer for Miami
We all believed this for the most part but trading out of #3 means that the Dolphins believe that their top choice will still be available at #6. With at least three quarterbacks going in the top five picks the Dolphins will battle the Falcons and Bengals for the best players available. I believe that the Dolphins are eyeing a top pass-catcher here at #6. With Atlanta going defense/QB and Cincy likely going with top OT Penei Sewell they are in a prime position to select former teammate of Tua, WR Devonta Smith or they could go with blue-chip prospect TE Kyle Pitts. The Dolphins also net an additional two 1st round picks that will play important roles in building this franchise into a contender. Another additional note is that Miami shipped off its own 2022 1st instead of San Francisco which cements their belief that they got the better deal in the trade and expect their pick to be at the end of the 1stround next year.
Jimmy Garropolo's Days are Numbered
San Francisco does not make this trade for any position other than quarterback. The 49ers have assured Garropolo that he would not be traded and this is the thinnest smokescreen I have ever seen. This however worries me that the 49ers do not have a guy and are settling for what they believe is the 3rd-best guy in the draft, by not being able to get to #2 this cements BYU QB Zach Wilson as the Jets choice and the 49ers will have their pick of Mac Jones, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields. This strategy worked for the Chargers last season when Justin Herbert fell into their lap and won Rookie of the Year, the 49ers hope that they can replicate that.
The Eagles are Committed to the Rebuild
The Eagles trade down surprises me really. With glimpses of Jalen Hurts'ability and the release of both starting WRs Desean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery, it seemed to be a shoo-in that the Eagles would select their favorite WR at #6. This idea came crashing down when reports came in that the Eagles were eyeing QB Zach Wilson and were threatened by San Francisco's move up to #3. In defeat, the Eagles decide to collect draft picks to help build this team back up from the ground, but can we really trust GM Howie Roseman to make these picks? Between Nick Foles, Carson Wentz, and Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia can not seem to make up it's mind on who they want under center. With rumors circling around a Deshaun Watson trade and now wanting to take a QB in the 1st round, it is clear to me that the Eagles want to rebuild, but they keep starting over before they can put something together.
