DK Metcalf signs 3yr $72 Million Extension with Seattle
Seahawks Wide Receiver and entire offense, DK Metcalf has finally got his bag from the team. Metcalf, a budding WR, makes his worth known and will continue to prove Seattle's investment in him. A lot of people seem to make this contract out to be some mega-deal, but really the deal is appropriate for a WR of his skill and the inflation rate of his positional market. Most of his money is coming in the form of bonuses meaning the team can work around contracts for other roster spots while he is carrying a less attractive cap hit. For 2022 and 2023, Metcalf will be on the books for about $9 and $14 million respectively. This jumps in 2024 to $24.5 with an easy out after, but by then the Seahawks will truly know what he is and how to go about his career with Seattle from there. Meanwhile there are guys out there like Jacksonville receiver Christian Kirk getting paid $21.5 million a year with less proven skill than Metcalf. I like this deal for Seattle as they keep their one shining star on the roster that will survive the incoming rebuild.
Chargers' S Derwin James and 49ers' WR Deebo Samuel Abstain from Practice Over Contract Negotiation
Chargers' (oft-injured) Safety Derwin James is considered to be one of the best safeties in the league despite playing only 36 games in his four year career. Heading into the fifth year of his rookie deal, James is looking to join his teammates Joey Bosa and Keenan Allen with a massive contract to keep this amazing roster together in an attempt for a super bowl run. As a Chargers fan and as a realist I believe that due to his presence at camp this situation should be handled readily unlike hold outs of Chargers' past S Eric Weddle and RB Melvin Gordon.
49ers WR Deebo Samuel is a different story. Earlier this offseason Samuel requested a trade request from San Francisco due to his displeasure with how they used him in their offense more as a RB than a WR. This situation reminds me of Minkah Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins when he forced his way out of Miami for the same reason. Deebo is one of the best offensive weapons in the NFL currently and I am not surprised the Niners are hesitant to let him go. For his sake I'd like to see Deebo explode elsewhere in an environment ripe with rebuild energy. Personally I believe that the best spot for him is in East Rutherford with Big Cat Enthusiast Zach Wilson and former San Francisco DC Robert Saleh. I liked this trade pre-draft due to their load of capital, but it may be hard to swing it now that they have spent their collection of treasure already, but if there was a snow ball's chance in Hell I'd jump at the opportunity to add him to my roster.
Update 7/31/22 8:29pm EST: Deebo Samuel has signed a 3-year $73.5m extension with SF
