Earlier this year ex-Dolphins head coach Brian Flores filed a lawsuit against multiple NFL teams alleging racist hiring procedures including conducting false interviews of minority prospects to fulfill diversity quotas. Flores also indicated that his former team tampered with then-Patriots QB Tom Brady and then-Saints HC Sean Payton in an attempt to lure them to Miami while they were still under contract with their respective teams. Flores also alleges that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross offered to pay him to lose games to "Tank for Tua".
The day after the Deshaun Watson deliberation the NFL concluded its investigation of the Dolphins and found them guilty of tampering. In response to this verdict, the Dolphins will lose their 2023 1st-Round Pick and 2024 3rd-Round pick, and Stephen Ross has been fined $1.5m and suspended from operations through October 17th. In Ross' statement, he still denies the findings but will cooperate with the league's punishment.
For a team trying to build a contender, it is not ideal for them to be losing high-value picks over the egregious undermining of the league's rules. In my opinion, the Dolphins are heading back to mediocrity as they cannot possibly continue building a roster without a lot of luck. Glaring holes in the roster need to be filled with blue chip talent in the first round and after spending half of their 2023 draft on WR Tyreek Hill their draft board will look a lot like the Rams minus the superstars the got in exchange for picks and instead, they can look at their investigation report. The time is ticking for QB Tua Tagovailoa and the team is actively holding him back from being at least a decent quarterback and making him look bad in their previous pursuits of Deshaun Watson and now Tom Brady.
Confidence is key in building contenders and if the team isn't completely sold on their roster they will never be able to compete. Right now they need to be there for their young QB and support him before he turns into Carson Wentz. Instead, they chose to get caught breaking rules in an attempt to get rid of him. This is a terrible act by Stephen Ross and if I were Tua I'd want to be out of there ASAP.
