Out of nowhere, the Indianapolis Colts announce that QB Sam Ehlinger will start this week against the Commanders. Matt Ryan has been a shell of his former self but still has kept the team afloat at 3-3-1. I see the need for a change at QB, but this seems too early and too drastic for them to bench the former MVP.
Ehlinger, the Texas product, has not completed a pass in the NFL and looks at his first career start. If he looks anything like Patriots' QB Bailey Zappe this will be a success for the team, but at the very least will be an interesting part of my backup QB rankings.
It is notable that Ehlinger gets the start over QB Nick Foles who won a Super Bowl with HC Frank Reich in Philadelphia. Ehlinger is now the seventh quarterback to start a game for Indy since 2018.
Update 10/24/22 2:04 EST:
Matt Ryan is suffering from a shoulder injury, which is the main cause of starting Sam Ehlinger. Colts' HC Frank Reich has stated that Ehlinger will be the starter for the remainder of the season.
