Next Man Up! Backup QB Rankings Week Eight

Mid-season is crucial for our backup QBs as they try to navigate their schedule and keep the pace their team has set. This is where we see what our friends are made of. This is Next Man Up! Week 8.

Next Man Up! Week Eight

Back to the Bench

All good things must come to an end and so our guests must make their way back to the locker room and wait to be called upon once more.

Case Keenum, BUF 1-0 (5)

Most Recent Performance: 67%, 11yds, 0 TD, 1 INT

Brian Hoyer, NE 0-1 (9)
Most Recent Performance: 83.3%, 37yds, 0 TD

Saquon Barkley ⭐️, NYG 1-0 (8)

Jacob Eason, CAR 0-1 (9)
Most Recent Performance: 60%, 59yds, 0 TD

Cooper Rush ⭐️⭐️⭐️, DAL 4-2 (3)

Brett Rypien, DEN 0-1 (8)
Most Recent Performance: 52.2%, 225yds, 0 TD, 1 INT

Bailey Zappe ⭐️⭐️⭐️, NE 2-2 (2)
Most Recent Performance: 63.6%, 185, 1 TD, 2 INT

The only big benching this week is Pats' rookie Bailey Zappe who messed up his chance to steal the starting job for good after playing mediocre against the Bears two weeks ago. I would have given him the chance personally, but I know given the investment in Mac Jones that Belichick has to stick with him for now.

The Rankings

8. Malik Willis, TEN 1-1 (2)
Most Recent Performance: 60%, 55yds, 0 TD, 1 INT

This is a ridiculous stat line for a QB that played an entire four quarters. The Titans leaned heavily on Derrick Henry while Willis sat there and handed the ball off. I feel like this confirms that Willis was not the QB everyone thought he was pre-draft. Highly disappointed.

7. Kenny Pickett, PIT 1-4 (0)
Most Recent Performance: 65.8%, 191yds, 0 TD, 1 INT

I'm out on Pickett already. This Steelers team does not have a pulse and he isn't doing anything to help it. How exactly was this team better with Mason Rudolph? I get wanting to see what Kenny has, but he ain't got shit.

6. Sam Ehlinger, IND 0-1 (NR)
Most Recent Performance: 73.9%, 201yds, 0 TD

Ehlinger's first NFL start was definitely whelming. He was outdueled by fellow backup Taylor Heinicke who, unlike Ehlinger, has a hero background already. Ehlinger was not bad in this game, he just played safe and tried not to mess up. He achieved his mission, but if he wants to succeed he needs to take some chances.

5. P.J. Walker ⭐️⭐️, CAR 1-3 (1)
Most Recent Performance: 52.8%, 317yds, 1 TD, 1 INT

Gold Star loss for Walker this week because had it not been for one of the worst kickers in the league, the Panthers would be in 1st place in the NFC South. Walker showed flashes nailing a Hail Mary to send the game to OT; by God's wrath, it was still not enough.

4. Jacoby Brissett ⭐️ , CLE 3-5 (1)
Most Recent Performance: 77.3%, 278yds, 2 TOT TD

He actually did it. Jacoby Brissett proved me wrong by taking control and destroying the Bengals on a spooky MNF. Brissett was able to effectively lead his team for once and even put matters into his own hands by scoring a rushing TD in the 3rd.

3. Andy Dalton ⭐️⭐️, NO 2-3 (1)
Most Recent Performance: 74.2%, 229yds, 2 TD

Honestly, I am surprised to see Dalton still in the starting lineup this week. I would have figured that Winston would have been healthy by now. Dalton put on another Gold Star Performance by leading a shutout against Las Vegas. Dalton connected with Kamara for 2 of his 3 touchdowns. The Red Rifle shoots down another team and continues his honest run.

2. Jimmy Garoppolo ⭐️, SF 4-3 (1)
Most Recent Performance: 84%, 235yds, 2 TD

The Garollercoaster keeps trending upwards after a smackdown of the defending champs on Sunday. With the help of do-it-all RB Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers climb further in the NFC standings. Jimmy G is starting to look comfortable again in the offense originally meant for him. This season looks bad for GM John Lynch who went all out to replace him and here he his leading a playoff-contending squad.

1. Taylor Heinicke ⭐️⭐️, WSH 2-0 (0)
Most Recent Performance: 74.2%, 279yds, 1 TD, 1 INT

Heinicke put on another solid performance against the Colts. What really pushed him into Gold Star Performance worthiness was his game-winning drive where he rocketed out a perfect Hail Mary to WR Terry McLaurin and subsequently snuck the ball in himself for the W.
