Rams Claim QB Baker Mayfield Off Waivers

The Los Angeles Rams have claimed former Carolina QB Baker Mayfield off of waivers. Although it's unlikely for Mayfield to start on Thursday night he seems to be in line to replace quarterback Matthew Stafford who has been shut down for the remainder of the season.

Of course Mayfield will have to compete against other backups Bryce Perkins and John Wolford and given his track record this will be an open competition.

This is a surprising move due to the Rams sitting firmly outside the playoff race and they do not necessarily need a quarterback. I see this as possibly a 4D chess move Los Angeles to starve their quarterback needy rivals ,the San Francisco 49ers, of any options at QB after the loss of Jimmy Garoppolo and hinder their path to the playoffs.

Baker will not turn the Rams' season around, but he may save them the embarrassment of gifting the Lions a top draft pick.
