Finally, all five head coaching positions are filled. With one massive swing for a coach and a couple post-Super Bowl hires, we welcome in the new league year and wish the best of luck to our new hires.
Denver Broncos Trade for Former Saints' HC Sean Payton
The Broncos seemingly had one of the toughest coaching searches among the bunch. After being turned down by a trio of Cowboys' DC Dan Quinn, Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh, and 49ers' DC Demeco Ryans, they turn to New Orleans who had a certain retired legendary coach's rights.
Denver sends a 2023 1st and 2024 2nd & 3rd to the Saints in exchange for Payton's rights. The Broncos hope that pairing Payton and QB Russell Wilson will fix the offensive woes they faced under Nathaniel Hackett.
Panthers Hire ex-Colts HC Frank Reich
The Colts fired Reich mid-season after being unable to turn the tides on a disastrous season after yet another QB change. Personally, I am not a fan of this hire and this screams "Carson Wentz signs 1-year deal with Panthers", Reich has been trying to sell dreams in Indianapolis ever since Andrew Luck retired and he is again tasked with rebuilding a team in Carolina.
Reich will have a lot of work to do if he wants to succeed in Carolina. They have the capital to do so, but they will have to be very wise on who they choose to invest their future in from this point forward.
Texans Hire Houston Legend and Former Texan DeMeco Ryans as HC
The 49ers in back-to-back years have produced a DC that became a HC after the season. Retired NFL LB DeMeco Ryans helped create the league's best defense and took his talents back to where he started in 2006. I have hope that Ryans can take the pieces in Houston and make them competitive a la Robert Saleh in New York. I am interested in how he tries to turn around a terrible Texans offense and fill the many holes on their roster.
Colts and Cardinals Poach Both Coordinators from NFC Champion Eagles
The Indianapolis Colts seemingly interviewed everyone and their mom for their head coaching position. In the end they land on Eagles OC Shane Steichen who can be credited for the development two hot, young QBs Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts. Steichen will be tasked with finding the next superstar QB and developing him in the same way. With their goal being clear this should be an A+ hire for the Colts.
The Cardinals, on the other hand, nab Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon. Honestly, this hire confuses me, Arizona has been commited to a hyper passing offense with Kyler Murray and Co. Instead of continuing the path they made for Murray to succeed they look to build the other side of the ball and see if Kyler can handle leading the offense. This could turn out good and Kyler excels with less supervision or he flounders and Arizona heads into yet another rebuild.
