Washington Places Franchise Tag on DT Daron Payne

Once again, the Washington Commanders will start their franchise tag shenanigans by tagging Pro Bowl DT Daron Payne. Payne is the forst player to be tagged this offseason and will look for a large extension from the team.

Washington has been known for not paying tagged players long term and instead held them hostage until they could no longer afford to. QB Kirk Cousins and OT Brandon Scherff were the last two to play tag with the Commanders and we see both of them no longer with the team.

The Commanders will pay close to $19 million to Payne this season and will likely have to pay a little over half of that salary to keep him for the future. Payne was ranked the 74th DT by PFF and the Commanders could be in danger of overpaying for a mid-tier DT. This will be a true "prove it" year for Payne with Washington investing so much in him for the 2023 season, if he under performs I can guarantee he will be elsewhere in 2024.
